The Free Reading Program

The Free Reading Program is a product developed by Essential Skills Advantage in partnership with EVC Consulting for The Education & Community Learning Center (Be Reading/ESA). The Education & Community Learning Center is a not-for-profit organization that aims to distribute free learning programs world-wide with the help of sponsors and donors.

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Be Reading/ESA, including its related companies which handle any personal information collected, stored or disclosed for users of this website. This Policy is accessible to any party accessessing this site either directly or through business partners or sponsors. By providing personal information to the Be Reading/ESA and having access to this Policy, either directly or through a business partner or service provider, an individual consents to the Be Reading/ESA collecting, holding, using and disclosing personal information in accordance with this Policy.

What information do we collect and how do we use it?

Signup Information

. When you sign up for our free program we ask you to provide your email address, first and last name, your country, and your state/region, your city. When you create students we require first name last name and age. This information is vital to tracking your students progress and tailoring learning content specific to their needs or requirements. You may use nicknames or pseudonym to keep your students anonymous.

How do we use this data?

We use your email address to confirm that you are a real person and occasionally send updates or information. We store each student’s progress using the following data:
  • Each Unit they are working on
  • Each Lesson they complete
  • The score they achieved
  • The amount of time they spend
  • The date
  • Each lesson may also be mapped to core competencies or measurement metrics to provide you with useful progress and reporting data.

    Who do we share your data with?

    We do not share or sell any information, personal or otherwise, with any third-party companies or advertisers. Our programs are free for you to use thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and donors. If you sign up to our programs through a sponsor, for example a Rotary Club, they have the ability to send you the occasional email notification for the purposes of sharing news or events. We do not share your email address directly with them. They can only send notifications through our website. Each sponsor is able to see overall usage statistics, activity, completions and average scores for student groups using the system in an area sponsored by them only. This data is displayed anonymously and your direct contact information and your student’s information is not accessible to them directly.

    Donations or sponsorships

    If you choose to sponsor donate to our program you may do this through our website or contact us directly. If you donate through our website you will be required to enter your billing information and credit card number. We do not store your credit card information. Credit card information is handled by our third-party gateway provider Stripe.

    Email communications

    When you sign up for a free membership you will automatically receive the occasional communication containing important information or news. You may opt-out of newsletter delivery via a link in the email itself. You may also receive occasional news or event posting from a sponsor if your membership is sponsored by one of our donors.

    Data storage and security

    Limiting access to education records Education records are only accessible to users who are logged in and have been successfully authenticated by entering a username and password. Students are only able to access their own progress, and teachers can only view students from within their school. Student and teacher data can only be accessed by Be Reading/ESA staff and partners. Data is never shared with third parties without explicit permission.

    Management of historical data

    When a membership to our programs expires or is cancelled, we retain the data in our database. If you would like this data to be deleted, you can contact our customer service team and we will be happy to oblige.

    Ensuring data is secure and protected

    Student and instructor data is stored in a secure database on our web servers. Access to these servers is limited to the application, and by software developers at Be Reading/ESAl. Passwords for users of the system are encrypted using salt and hash technologies. All data transferred within this system is encrypted and transferred via SSL. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. SSL is an industry standard and is used by millions of websites in the protection of their online transactions with their customers.

    Disclosure of information to third parties

    Be Reading/ESA does not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third party sources. The term 'third party sources' does not include Be Reading/ESA's related companies. It also does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others' rights, property or safety. However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising or other uses.
